Rating: 4 out of 5.

I was super excited to read this book and it has not disappoint. A strong 4.5 stars for me.

Here’s why it is that rating than a 5…

My Review:

Holmberg’s writing is vividly enthralling where you truly get sucked into the world she created. The painting of the enchanting but dangerous wildwood is beautifully done, where most of this story unfolds.

This story has a strong female lead and a relatable heroine willing to sacrifice herself for all she holds dear. She was just right as a heroine, she was not foolish to the point of annoying but she was a romantic and she fought for what she believed was her happiness.

The pacing of the story is well balanced but at some point, it got predictable, especially towards the end. The mortal world-building was wonderfully written but it somehow lacked context when it comes to the “Deep” and the realm of the mystings. We were given a backstory of a failed war and an overview of the vengeful leader but that was it. The book just fell short there in my point of view.

Overall, it was a great story of good and evil, magic and romance. It depicts the Will of trust, redemption and humanity in the face of monstrosity. The Wildness of the transformative power of love and connection that inspires to conquer all.

A thoroughly enjoyable read, one that I will remember for a while. Highly recommended.
