Rating: 3 out of 5.

This book has put me in a state of ambivalence. Initially enjoyed the beginning, then it got so boring for me. I was so disconnected with the story and the characters that I had to pull all manners of mundane power that I have to get through the story.

Review:

The Atlas Six is a blend of fantasy, academia and social hierarchy set in a world where magic is a coveted commodity. People with magic are revered and many are well-positioned in society.

We follow the chosen Six, why they were drafted and their growth and discovering their full potential. Their conflict or lack of when the sacrifices of greater magic were unveiled.

The characters feel insufferable as you follow their points of view. They are after all members of the privileged and powerful elite. Their arrogance and entitlement are expected, a reflection of their status. This must be a deliberate action from the author to make the characters authentic and further highlight the corrupt influence of power.

The novel’s reference to secret societies draws a layer of intrigue and parallel to our world’s conspiracies. Hinting at potential for hidden agendas and manipulation. Introducing an opposing power add the good vs evil theme. However, who you deem good now may become the evil later.

The Atlas Six is well researched, the scientific references are injected to the story line with careful deliberation. The exploration of power dynamics is not something new but has delivered its purpose. While the characters are challenging at times, their flaws add to the complexity of the narrative.

Famous Highlights:

Money couldn’t buy happiness, but nothing could buy happiness, so at least money could buy everything else.

My highlights:

“You’re a fire hazard, Rhodes,” he said. “So stop apologizing for the damage and just let the fucker burn.”

Remarks:

  • Insufferable characters
  • Well researched academic references
  • Secret socities
  • Academia
  • Magic
  • Reminds me a lot of a TV show called The Magicians.
